Endings & True Ending

There are four endings. Final Battle is the true ending; Annihilation and Lóng's Roar also play out on Mount Soulrend, and Undying Grudge only happens when the clock runs out in 66 Days mode. The names below are the ones the game puts on screen. Story details are hidden until you open them.

Last verified Nov 5, 2026 · Names and trophy pop-ups checked in retail footage; triggers and requirements come from three launch-week guides, which do not fully agree. We say where they differ.

The four endings

Final Battle

决战True ending
How to get it: Finish every true-ending requirement (below), then beat Leng Tu and Meng Hua on Mount Soulrend. Zuo Shang appears and the fight moves through a golden portal into the Fallen Dream.
What you get: The Gold trophy With Heart and Blood ("All Comes to Light") pops as the title card appears. KeenGamer lists Aureate, the Broken Lóng Body, the Radiant Heart and the Legacy outfit as rewards. Final boss: Zuo Shang.
Show story spoiler
You fight Zuo Shang twice (the second name bar reads "Zuo Shang, the True Lóng"), then a quick-time sequence. KeenGamer says it reveals who Zuo Shang is to Soul.

Annihilation

湮灭Default ending
How to get it: What you get if the true-ending requirements are not done when you beat Leng Tu and Meng Hua (KeenGamer). KeenGamer's own table and text disagree on whether missing only the Lóng Pillars also leads here; its text says that case gives Lóng's Roar instead.
What you get: Nothing extra is listed beyond the Meng Hua fight; KeenGamer says the Gold trophy All Dreams Must End ("All Schemes Come to Nothing") is for beating Meng Hua in any of the three Mount Soulrend endings. Final boss: Meng Hua.
Show story spoiler
Per KeenGamer, Meng Hua revives after the fight, taunts Soul and destroys the Wulin.

Lóng's Roar

龙吟Alternate ending
How to get it: Per KeenGamer only: everything for the true ending is done except Bloodline Awakening, the five Lóng Pillar duels, so leave at least one pillar unbeaten. No other guide we read describes this trigger.
What you get: KeenGamer lists the Blizzard outfit.
Show story spoiler
Per KeenGamer, Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua, takes Soul to his childhood home, and the duel that follows cannot be won.

Undying Grudge

饮恨66 Days only
How to get it: The results screen states the condition: "Failed to uncover the truth and find the “Heart” before the end of your sixty-six-day lifespan." In 66 Days mode every defeat costs a day; when the count reaches 0 the run ends here.
What you get: No trophy. The results screen offers New Cycle or Return to Title Screen.
Show story spoiler
Zuo Shang mourns Soul at a grave outside his childhood home ("I've lost my greatest rival... and a brother").

True ending requirements

The first two and Quick Hand Zhang appear in all three guides. The rest come from one or two of them; each row says which. We have not run these checks in the game ourselves.

Secrets at the Heart of the Lake

Listed by KeenGamer, games.gg, Game Informer
Beat the four scarecrow Acolytes for their masks: Yanru (Village of Lu), Lei Ting (Pangzhen; burn the barrier with the Flaming Mane), Guhe (Meigu Lake) and Hansui (with the Puppet Scavenger in the Crimson Manor). Get both Crystal Puppet Eyes: Yang from the Crimson Manor fight, Yin from finishing the optional Mountain of Imprisonment. With all four masks, take the Sha-Chi boat to the mirror in western Meigu Lake, beat the boss of the realm behind it, set both eyes in the puppet statue and defeat the puppet monks at the ritual.
games.gg warns that leaving the mirror realm after its boss, before the eyes and the ritual, ends the quest. The trophy Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake is for completing it.

Bloodline Awakening: all five Lóng Pillars

Listed by KeenGamer, games.gg, Game Informer
Beat the Gold-Masked One at all five Lóng Pillars: Weeping Creek Valley, Crimson Forest, eastern Meigu Lake, the Phantom Illusionist realm behind the Meigu Lake mirror, and Mirage Estate (where the name bar reads Mo Yuan, Leader of the Bastion of Mo).
The fifth pillar is inside Mirage Estate, so it comes after the Mirage Estate cut-off. The trophy Phantom and Blade is for completing Bloodline Awakening.

Purple-icon Tales before Mirage Estate

Listed by KeenGamer, games.gg
Finish every Tale marked with a purple icon in the quest log before you enter Mirage Estate. games.gg names ten: Allure of Vanity, Crimson Manor, Deep in the Valley, Illusion of Inanis, Illusory Pipa, Pillars of Kunlun, Secrets at the Heart of the Lake, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, The Herald's Illusion and Whence the Weeping.
Game Informer does not mention this cut-off.

Quick Hand Zhang's requests

Listed by KeenGamer, games.gg, Game Informer
Find the relics Quick Hand Zhang asks for and hand them to him; picking them up is not enough (games.gg). This also unlocks the Flying Dagger and Goldblaze.
The count differs: KeenGamer says 16 relics with the last three in Mirage Estate; Game Informer says three relics in green-glowing chests across his five appearances.

Zhu Yuan and Bi Feng

Listed by KeenGamer
Defeat Zhu Yuan, the Searing Blade and Bi Feng, Giant Saber Commander (the trophy The Two Blade Masters).
Only KeenGamer lists this; games.gg and Game Informer do not.

The three Serpent items

Listed by Game Informer
Collect the White Serpent Eye, Black Serpent Fang and Red Serpent Tongue, then follow the main quests to the finale. The White Serpent Eye drops from Heartpiercer in the White Serpent House.
Only Game Informer lists this as a separate requirement.

Points of no return

Entering Mirage Estate (the Green Serpent House door in Pangzhen)

Unfinished purple-icon Tales from before this point are locked once you go in; KeenGamer says the game warns you at the door. PC Gamer found the cut-off generous: Inanis implies it, but its writer finished some steps after entering and still got the true ending.
ReportedSource: KeenGamer, games.gg; PC Gamer disagrees

The Last Chance bell, Mount Soulrend

Past this bell you cannot leave the final boss run until an ending plays. games.gg says the warning appears even when everything is done; KeenGamer says Inanis also warns you if requirements are open.
ReportedSource: KeenGamer, games.gg, Game Informer

Every boss on the route has a page in the boss list. For the trophies tied to these quests, see Trophies & Platinum; for 66 Days mode, see Difficulty Modes.

FAQ

How many endings does Phantom Blade Zero have?

Four: Final Battle (the true ending), Annihilation, Lóng's Roar and Undying Grudge, which only happens in 66 Days mode. All four names appear on screen, on an "Ending" title card or the results screen. KeenGamer notes that S-GAME had mentioned eight endings before launch; the retail game shows these four.

What is the true ending in Phantom Blade Zero?

Final Battle. After Leng Tu and Meng Hua, Zuo Shang leads Soul through a golden portal for a last two-stage duel. Its title card comes with the Gold trophy With Heart and Blood.

How do you get the true ending?

Guides agree on three things: finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake (four Acolyte masks, both Crystal Puppet Eyes, the mirror-realm ritual), beat the Gold-Masked One at all five Lóng Pillars, and complete Quick Hand Zhang's requests. Two of the three also say to finish every purple-icon Tale before entering Mirage Estate. KeenGamer adds Zhu Yuan and Bi Feng; Game Informer adds three Serpent items.

Is the true ending missable?

Parts of it are. Purple-icon Tales left unfinished when you enter Mirage Estate are locked, according to KeenGamer and games.gg. Past the Last Chance bell on Mount Soulrend you are committed to an ending.

Can you get the true ending after the credits or in a new cycle?

After the true ending you can start New Game+ by speaking to Inanis, and change the difficulty as you do; your weapons and Phantom Edges carry over (PC Gamer). The 66 Days results screen we checked also offers New Cycle. KeenGamer suggests a route that gets Lóng's Roar first, then Final Battle from a save at the Last Chance bell, then Annihilation in a new cycle; we have not checked whether that save trick works.

What is the 66 Days ending?

Undying Grudge. In 66 Days mode each defeat costs one of 66 days; when none are left the run ends. The results screen gives the reason as failing "to uncover the truth and find the “Heart” before the end of your sixty-six-day lifespan". It has no trophy.

Which trophies are tied to the endings?

Two Gold trophies: With Heart and Blood ("All Comes to Light"), which we saw pop with the Final Battle title card, and All Dreams Must End ("All Schemes Come to Nothing"), which KeenGamer ties to beating Meng Hua. The quests behind the true ending have their own: Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake and Phantom and Blade.
